walking through the freshly fallen snow with microphones attached to my feet. this isn't the snow sound i was trying to capture. i need a crunchier kind of snow for that recording. this is an interesting sound anyway because of the rhythmic noise that the wind makes as my feet cut through it.

last night the chicago blogger group met up at the flat top grill to celebrate the latest release of no east. in attendance was me, j3s, heather, naz, shylo, phineas, paul, joe, alex, chris, troy and ms. e, matt, leigh, andrew, and cinnamon. i had a good time and it was nice putting faces together with weblogs.

flat top grill is a stir fry restaurant that advertises a stir fry adventure. against the wall there is a bar of food and at the end there is a grill. after gettiing a bowl at the beginning of the line, you fill it up with the food items you want in your stir fry. at the end of the bar you give your food to the people at the grill who then prepare it and bring it to you at your table. choosing your own ingredients is a great concept since you only get the stuff you like. though if you aren't very creative when it comes to cooking, you might end up with gross stir fry. this sound clip is taken near the grill as a cook prepares someone's stir fry.

sushi is one of my favorite foods. i go out for sushi much more frequently than i should. this clip is from sai cafe.
the unagi don was a little overcooked but the saba and the dynamite appetizer were both tasty enough to keep me coming back. the music they were playing on this particular night left a lot to be desired, but at least it was more or less in the background. in anticipation of the sushi that i would soon be eating, i didn't even notice the music until after i finished my meal. even kenny g. is better than the loud trance music that can be heard at some of the more trendy sushi restaurants though.

despite the fact that i have just eaten lunch, listening to this has made me want more sushi.

thanks to laura punsalan for making me aware of this sound and encouraging me to go record it in the bitter cold. it's from a large sheet of metal covering a hole in the road at dearborn and lake. every time a car drives over it there is a startling racket.

a 30 mph sign connected to a lightpole outside my apartment makes the best noise on a windy night.

various

all of the sounds in this post come from the museum of contemporary art in chicago.

Archigram: Experimental Architecture 1961-1974

01/11/03 14:59 mp3 = 00:01:00

the archigram exhibit is the main reason i went to the museum on this day. archigram (from architectural and telegram) was a collective of experimental architecture artists who designed alternative living structures and cities.
this voice and the cool sound that accompanies it came from a small television just inside the archigram exhibit at the mca. the clip i caught seems to capture the idea behind the archigrams themselves.

01/11/03 15:04 mp3 = 00:00:30

while i was looking at the different pieces in the archigram collection, i could hear several background noises; multimedia pieces within the exhibit, people shuffling around, someone laughing, someone walking, someone saying something like "stop it," and an eerie tune.

01/11/03 15:19 mp3 = 00:00:15

this noise was coming from a noise generator sitting next to a futuristic picnic/barbecue scene.

Gillian Wearing: Mass Observation

01/11/03 15:47 mp3 = 00:00:45

a video exhibit (2 into 1) of a mother speaking frankly of her children's attitudes and behaviours and the children speaking about their mother's. during the parts where the mother was speaking the child she was talking about was on the screen instead of her. the child's lips were synced to the mother's voice perfectly so that it appeared the child was talking using the mother's voice. given the subject matter of the soliloquys, the video was pretty disturbing. this sound clip is of the mother speaking of her son lawrence. from the video i gathered that lawrence was probably 8 to 12 years old.

the building in which i work has many sets of stairs and one elevator. even though there are only four floors to service, the elevator is extremely slow. people usually take the stairs. this particular stairway has dark wood stained stairs that are worn down the most used pathway in the center.

near the water tower on michigan avenue, an area that gets a lot of foot traffic and a good area to show your tricks for the hope of a buck, there are usually street performers. on this particular day there were two young boys with makeshift drums and drumsticks. they had quite an audience of other kids their age and a few tourists. i watched and listened for a moment before i noticed a rather sad excuse for a bear standing next to a radio with a cardboard sign that said "jingle bell bear." it was obvious that he was a street performer, but he didn't seem to be performing and it wasn't very clear what his show might contain if he were to perform. after the boys stopped beating on the buckets, the jingle bell bear revaled some frustration.
