03/28/03 listen 1           listen 2

this sound clip is taken at the metro. the artist is plaid. between the electronic compositions, the crowd cheers as they stop dancing for just a moment and the next track begins.

after listening to an electronic music show, it is always fairly disconcerting to come outside to a world that suddenly seems more quiet than it was before you went in. the contrast between the decibel levels on top of the dance induced feelings of euphoria (aided by one or two mixed drinks) tends to leave me feeling as if the world has taken on some kind of surreal quality that it somehow lacked before. because of the seemingly new quality of sound, i sat on a porch and listened to a bird chirping, cars stopping at a stop sign, and a barely audible far off train (listen 2).

Ok, you totally didn't explain why the second clip is funny, so I will.

We came back to my house, moderately buzzed, at 4am. I was pretty convinced that the bird you can hear is actually one of our friendly neighbourhood drug dealers communicating with his or her cohorts. They do this, you know, use whistles and calls to signal the arrival of cops n stuff. Anyway, I was so convinced that I managed to get Alicia to believe it too, and she's not at all as gullible as I am. Heh. So we've been calling it the "crack bird," even though you're more likely to find heroin on my corner.

Oh, and it's a fabulous clip to listen to with headphones. Very old Orb-ish.

buzzed?! speak for yourself.

someone (tif) informs me that this bird is a robin, and probably a male robin looking for his mate. thanks tif!
