04/11/03 16:13 listen

on the way to meet a few friends for happy hour at the original billy goat tavern i passed a loading dock door underneath michigan avenue, it looked much like a garage door but a little larger to accomodate large trucks making deliveries. for whatever reason, the door was shaking and wobbling and making all sorts of racket though nothing really seemed to be going on. i waited for a moment, thinking it was about to open, but it never did. the sound was a little reminiscent of the kids who beat on boxes or upside down buckets on the streets, while still seeming a little like some electric machine (maybe a generator) inside the loading dock.

It's almost sounds like some sort of spazz train.

I sometimes wish you posted more pictures to go along with these things. Although, I'm not sure if that would help or hurt things. On one hand it would reel the imagination into a specific focused image. On the other hand it would place a limit on imagination.

Pfft!

LOL! That is an awsome recording! No every siren doesnt go off at the same time. Ours go at 1:00pm on the first monday of the month. So do you know how sirens work? Its a really cool explenation! I always thought that they had little speakers that made the noise, but now that im a part of AirRaidSirens.com ive learned they really run on a mechanical basis. I also have learned the name of EVERY siren produced! We have Allertors made by ACA (allerting communications of america). And also there are some sirens that have 2 pitches, like taking that one siren sound and adding another at a higher or lower pitch. THat started in the 193o's when there was a need for "air raid sirens" The official tone for Civil Defense of America was a minor 3rd which would be like pushing the C and the Dflat on the piano. In 1950 Federal Sign and Signal Produced a siren that put out a 4th pitch (striking C and F on the piano) and then in 1970 most new sirens were switched over to a single tone. WHat you heard in the recording is a Federal Signal 2001. THis siren was acually made in 1989 which kinda defeats the purpose of the name... 2001... i thought it was made that year :-D. Well i hope this info makes you wonder the next time you walk by one of the majestic yellow beasts on a pole... or white... or red... oh yah one more thing! You can tell what kind of siren it is by the color! CD or today as we know it TORNADO is usually Yellow or White... Flood is usually blue and Fire is usually Red. Have fun and RECORD MORE SIRENS!! ITS FUN TO LISTEN! especially for all of us at teh ARS message board!

The once a month test dates for sirens are different from town to town, city to city and county to county. However, quite a few communities choose the first Wednesday of the month.

Where I'm at, there are a lot of smaller towns around me that test their sirens daily at noon, except Sunday. Some counties that don't have any really decent sized towns will test daily at noon county-wide.

The siren in your recording is at best bet a Federal Signal 2001. I don't know for sure without you asking your community, but it's a damn good bet. The 2001 is a fairly new siren and very popular in some areas. It's also very loud, in dB format, and extremely loud to humans due to it's shrill 750hz - 790hz output.

http://www.airraidsirens.com and it's section of links has a lot of info, and you can get more from the message board.

You can also learn some siren stuff at my site: http://bitsandpieces.cprogramming.com which grows a little day by day.
