04/12/03 listen 1           listen 2

recently i made a trip out to mitsuwa, a japanese grocery store/mall in arlington heights. after wandering through the store entranced by the brightly colored, happy looking packaging of food items for a while, i remembered that i should be recording sounds. sometimes it slips my mind, mainly when i'm visually stimulated, and especially when i am around food items. at mitsuwa most of the packaging is in japanese and since i don't read japanese i purchased things based on the picture on the front. it worked out well for the most part, but i did end up with a few items that weren't exactly what i was looking for.

in the frozen food section, there was an awful racket. i wasn't exactly sure what was going on, but for some reason there was a lot of banging coming from the grocer's freezer. someone told me there was a drum class taking place in a room behind the food. listen 1 is me standing there looking at food items recording the banging taking place. i think it must have been a beginner drum class as it doesn't sound very complicated or synchronized.

listen 2 was recorded as i was leaving. at the entrance/exit there was a kiosk set up with about 6 different people attempting to get you to try different samples of food by yelling out stuff as you walk by. since i don't speak japanese, i have no idea what the woman is yelling out in this clip. i imagine it is something along the lines of, "come here and try this really good food item."

Nice. I'd like to go sometime on a weekday, it's always so crowded and bustling on weekends. Which, I suppose, makes for better sound clips ;)
