this is the sound of a horses hooves clopping around on chicago avenue looking for tourists to pick up at $30 per half hour. i am betting that most of the 30 minutes is spent waiting in traffic. these horse drawn carriages really bother me, so much so that i have had to bite my lip to keep myself from crying on a few occasions. the horses are walking on hard cement all day and inhaling traffic fumes. they are wearing those blinders so they can't see anything to their sides, only that which is straight ahead of them, usually cabs, busses, cars, and trucks. i've seen them on several occasions early in the morning coming from near halsted and chicago to head into the city. i really doubt the city has a hidden grassy horse pasture over there for all those horses, meaning they are probably locked up in some warehouse overnight. i don't see it as being a fun thing to do with your kids or a romantic thing to do with your significant other. i consider the whole thing animal abuse and wish the city would sieze all the horses and send them to a nice pasture to roam around on soft grass. of course, the city sanctions it since they too have their police on horses patrolling populated areas. the police should ride around on segways or vespas. horses just do not belong in the city.

i'll second that. horses are still in the heart of city. the invention of cars was partly accelerated by the cry to remove all horses to pastures and away from the increasingly harsh, concrete and dense urban environment. but the markets of nostalgia and contrived romance step-in and well, we still have horses captured in a time wrap. everytime i see an horse-drawn carriage, i think of chis ware. that block of chicago is structured on memory.
