# squirrels # mp3 = 00:02:02

the squirrels are up to something. this one was at my window, distracting me from doing anything with its half catlike, half birdlike cry. the anguished sound went on for over 30 minutes before i got up to find out where it came from. at first i thought the little squirrel was stuck in a precarious spot out on the wood pole by my window. then i wondered if it was bothered by the sounds of construction, tearing down a home, maybe the squirrel's home. i watched it for a while, twitching its tail and rubbing its claws together. i wondered what i could do to help it. there was nothing; squirrels live in a different world than i. i took a picture and recorded the cry. after two minutes of recording the squirrel turned around, stepped out onto the wire, and scurried away. he must have gotten his message across.

when you play this recording, i highly suggest you put your speakers in the window and turn up the volume. this message from the squirrel needs to be heard, and this is the only way. also, if you could please buy a bag of unshelled nuts at the store and throw them out into your yard, it would be greatly appreciated.

i normally would never say something like that, the squirrel made me say it.

The squirrels in my 'hood do this all the time. They will often sit near the back windows, on telephone poles in the alley, and squawk away for long periods. I've walked past them underneath, looked up, trying to figure out why they do it.

Suffice it to say I have no idea. Maybe they are starting to recognize that we own a dog that *loves* to chase them squirrelies.

There's a great article by Diane Ackerman called "In Praise of Squirrels" (National Geographic, Nov. 1995). I've only read excerpts, but highly recommend it (she's an excellent observer, and an excellent writer to boot).

I read about squirrel hunting into today's New York Times. It sounds like it's rather popular in Louisianna.

It is funny how we don't notice these small animals around us unless they are either dead on the road or behaving oddly. I ran across something similar a few weeks ago. I heard this horrible racket and saw it was a squirrel. At the time I thought it must be sick or something, but now maybe I wonder if squirrels do this sort of thing from time to time. You can hear the squirrel I heard at this link: http://www.shewbox.org/archives/000068.html

wow. everyday i hear more and more of the squirrels making this noise. i'm very curious what the noise is.
ben: nice page. i like it a lot!
peter: i bet you eat squirrel all the time there in new york.
avoision: i'm looking around for the article. thanks.
joe: i wish your dog the greatest success in catching a squirrel. my dog is too slow, though he still tries.

The squirrels around here do that all the time too. There's one in particular that comes to the same tree almost daily, as if it's his weeping spot. He doesn't bark intermittently like most do, just cries and cries. The poor thing looks so dejected, almost flattened against the branch with his tail drooping over him and his little paws scrunched under him. I wonder if Evanston residents are particularly cruel to squirrels or if I just notice them more than most people.

in Taipei, at the botanical garden, this summer, i was shocked by some very strange barks coming from the trees. of course it was a local macho squirrel screaming in a very long crescendo. even amongst the super-noisy cicadas, the passing people had to stop and sometimes applauded for this incredible performance.
i remember also in India, some years ago, a fight between a squirrel and a group of small birds. It was my fault : i was giving the birds some pieces of bread, and nothing for the poor squirrel...
